Sports - Hillbrooke’s Michaela Owen finishes 4th in Golf World Championship
Date Posted: Aug 20, 2007

10 year old Michaela Owen of Hillbrooke just returned from Pinehurst, North Carolina from the US KIDS GOLF World Championship. She earned a trip to the invitation only event by finishing third in the US KIDS REGIONAL Championship at Jekyll Island earlier in the year. The invitations are sent to the World’s top players and an elite field of the world’s 63 best 10 year old girls was assembled for a week of competition at the ‘Home of American Golf’ in and around Pinehurst. 1175 total players in all boys and girls age groups representing every state (including Alaska) and 33 countries from around the world were on hand for the tournament. The town of Pinehurst just hosted the Women’s US Open in June of this year and every year embraces the US KIDS World Championship event for a week in late July. The US KIDS Tournament uses eight of the 23 courses in the Pinehurst area including the legendary Pinehurst #2 course.

Michaela played three tournament rounds at the beautiful Longleaf Resort and finished the tournament 2 under par and tied for fourth place in this incredibly talented field of 10 year old girl’s golfers. Marijosse Navarre from Mexico won the 10 year old girls tournament with Michaela six strokes behind her. Michaela was just three strokes out of second place. Her fourth place finish earned a return trip to next year’s World Championship July 30th - August 3rd, 2008. She was honored with a beautiful silver cup trophy at the closing ceremonies for finishing fourth.

This summer Michaela played in the Girls 13-17 age group in the Atlanta Junior Golf Association (AJGA) www.atlantajuniorgolf.org. She competed in the AJGA at courses all around Atlanta and finished third in the season standings and third in their Tour Championship at Stone Mountain the week before she went to Pinehurst. She also won the Georgia State Girls Junior Championship at Dunwoody Country Club in the 9-11 age bracket earlier in June.

In 2008 Michaela has scheduled six major tournaments in three states and will again compete locally in the Atlanta Junior Golf Association high school division and play on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour www.sjgt.com and the All American Junior Golf Tour www.aajgt.com. She also hopes to earn a spot in the highly selective Optimist Junior Golf Tournament at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, FL next July.
